Weight Loss Program 

Over the years, as a physician, I have seen many patients who have lost significant amounts of weight. I had asked them what they had done to succeed in this difficult problem of losing weight.

I have identified 4 methods that have worked for these patients in losing up to 70 pounds in about 6 months.

Today, it is estimated that 1/3 of all Americans are overweight. The following are some ways to control weight, that I have observed being effective for my patients.
Remember, none of these are my recommendations as a physician.
1. Portion Control

This is by far the easiest and gives long-term results.

Basically, continue eating the way you always have, however in smaller portions. There are numerous tricks to that, one of them to fill up your plate at the kitchen counter and bringing it to the table, but don't place the large plates on the table itself. Drink a glass of water before you start eating.

2. Weight Watchers
From my patients that I have followed over the years, people who have followed this program have done well over long periods. Doing this online does not work as well. It appears that attending the meeting weekly and being afraid the week before that you will be weighed, discourages one from over eating.
3. Pre-Determined Diets
These work very well too. Jenny Craig is a good example. These programs, however, can be costly.
4. Low-Carb Diet

This is very effective, however it does not work on everybody. Most people will eventually get tired of it, and abandon it. One thing that may help is to at least understand the hyper-glycemic index. This is the value of a food item as far as making a sudden surge in insulin. The list is long and it is best to obtain from the internet. The higher the hyperglycemic index of a food item, the worse it is for you. Two surprising examples with very high glycemic index are baked potatoes and rice.

If you decide to go on this low-carb diet, there are a few tricks you can use.

     1.You and your partner will have to help each other. It is very hard for only one partner to be on this diet while the other is not. It becomes very hard to cook two different kinds of meals. 
     2. Every weekend, one should sit down and plan every meal for the coming week. Usually, people who cannot do this, cannot succeed. We cannot come home at 6 o'clock, famished and tired, and then try to figure out what to cook.
     3. You have to get familiar with the restaurants and fast food stores, and know precisely the items suitable fora low-carb diet. You should know whenever you decide to go out during this period precisely where to go and precisely what to order.
     4. For people with a sweet tooth, try diet Jello.

Mayo Clinic Diet

Diet given to heart patients needing to lose weight fast for surgery.  
In 2 1/2 months, you should lose 52 pounds.


Breakfast:
1/2 grapefruit or juice (unsweetened)
2 eggs, any style
2 slices of bacon

Lunch:
1/2 grapefruit or juice (unsweetened)
salad, any dressing
meat, any style, any amount

Dinner:
1/2 grapefruit or juice ( unsweetened)
meat, any style, any amount, may substitute fish
vegetable, any green or red (cooked in butter or any seasoning) or salad.

Bedtime Snack:
glass of tomato juice or skim milk


Instructions:
At any meal, you may eat until you are full or until you cannot eat any more.
Don’t eliminate anything from the diet, especially don’t skip the bacon at breakfast or salads.  It’s  
   the combination of foods that burn fat
The grapefruit is important because it acts as a catalyst that starts the burning process.  
Cut down on coffee, it effects the balance that hinders the burning process.  Try to limit to 1 cup 
   at mealtimes.
Don’t eat between meals.  If you eat the combination of foods suggested you will not get hungry.
The Diet completely eliminates sugars and starches which are lipids and form fat.  Fat does not 
   form fat.  Fat helps burn fat so you can fry foods in butter and use butter generously on 
   vegetables.
Do not eat deserts, breads, and white vegetables or sweet potatoes.  Eat until you are stuffed.  
   The more you eat, the more weight you will lose.
You can lose 10 pounds in 10 days.  There will be no loss on the first 4 days, but you will lose
   5 pounds on the 5th day, therefore, you will lose 1 1/2 pounds every 2 days until you are where

For longer periods of time, doing the low-carb diet for 5 days and being off it on weekends may be a good way for long-term weight control.
If you decide to get into these programs, it is wise to have your family physician do a physical examination and some blood tests before. These may need to be repeated every three months afterwards until you get to a stable weight, then once a year.
